Caring for cemetery monuments in Istria

The catalogued Italian tombs in Istria and in the islands until 1954 exceed 17.000 units. The cemeteries taken in consideration cover the peninsular area under the Croatian jurisdiction. We are currently completing the catalogue related to the Istrian cemeteries in Slovenia. The catalogue with photographs for each tomb is available in our Institute. As in past years, the Institute will continue, on the one hand, to support the tomb owners and sellers and their rising requests, on the other, to strengthen the relation with the municipal administration bodies. However, given the considerable amount of work required in this branch, that we can hardly cope with due to our own duties and tasks, this matter will be re-examined at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as agreed with Università Popolare of Trieste. We are convinced that funding should be regularly provided throughout the year and nor through occasional subsidies provided in the first period of regional administration activity of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto neither through subsidies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs channeled in the funds managed by the Università Popolare of Trieste. At the same time, it is necessary to tackle, at governmental level, such problems as maintenance costs and fees for abandoned tombs to be preserved due to their historical or artistic value.
